Catch Uo Week---a Few Worries

Evrim and I decided to devote Week 4 discussion time to getting both the Week 2 and Week 3 discussions started up and vibrant. When I visited these discussions today, I was a little disappointed in what I found. I am looking for student discussion posts that demonstrate a strong knowledge of the readings and an ability to synthesize the readings and apply them professionally. I want students to learn to use the readings as they confront issues of learning and technology use. I had hoped that the Week 2 discussions would result in group definitions of constructivist learning theory, relating these definitions to ideas from our other two authors. And I was looking for similar insights from students around our Week 3 readings. I was excited to find the work of Group 1 in Week 3-----students were very close to my expectations for the discussion. And then I remembered that it is only Tuesday and that the other discussions would probably continue to add specifics and richness as our catch up week continues! I decided to send an email to encourage discussion participation this week.
I know we lost momentum with the Moodle blip and I look forward to regaining this momentum this week!

  2. Assignment question:
Since kindergarten students are not writing yet, can I have them complete a pre-writing lesson, and then have them tell a story, instead of write it? I will then tape them as they are telling their story to attach with lesson.
My other option, is for them to illustrate a story, and I can dictate, but I don't like doing that to their work.

  3. Marisa---that sounds like a perfect solution. You might want to consider making podcasts of their stories---but not for this assignment! We will be talking about podcasting a little later in the course.

  4. Hopefully now that the week has progressed, you have seen more of what you were looking for, I think the moodle blip just threw everyone off for a few days. We should all be back into the swing of things now! Thank you for the catch up time, it was MUCH appreciated

  5. Ann, I am sorry about how things have been going with my group for the week 2 discussions. I have been hit with two different illnesses and other school related items. This led to poor leadership skills on my part.

I am going to put out a last call for my members to give some input and plan to post a summary Saturday evening. I am still not feeling well, but should be able to do this.

I love the forum format and really want us to have deeper discussions. Your direction has been great, and I am hoping that your emails lit a small fire.

Thank you for reminding everyone of the urgency for professionalism and the need to rely on the readings to support our opinions.

  6. As a discussion leader, it is challenging to make discussion posts head in a specific direction.

  7. I agree with you, Kate, and it is really hard when people don't post until late in the week!

  8. I really like Marissa and Ann's idea about podcasting the stories of students whom can't quite yet write. I'll be looking forward later in the course (when we get to podcasting) to hearing some of those if you decide to go that way Marissa. I will be back on track and caught up this week very soon, FINALLY! :) the last two weeks or so seems to have been rough for a few of us.
